OBJECTIVE METHODS FOR THE SELF-ASSESSMENT OF FUNCTIONAL STATUS IN MEDICAL STUDENTS
Abstract
Abstract. Aim. This study aims to select methods for the ongoing self-monitoring of functional status during learning activities and to apply these selected methods for the subsequent evaluation of this status in students. Materials and methods. The study involved second-year medical students of both sexes (n = 89), with their functional status assessed by the chosen methods. Results. In both male and female students, the Pirogova Physical Condition Assessment method, the Genchi’s Breath-Hold Test, and response latency values were within reference values. The correlation analysis demonstrated that students’ rankings had no significant relationship with the obtained data. The Pirogova Physical Condition Assessment method showed the prevalence of a moderate level in students of both sexes (median [1st; 3rd quartiles]): 0.51 [0.43; 0.685] vs. 0.505 [0.40; 0.685], respectively (p = 0.936, the difference was not statistically significant, Mann-Whitney U-test). The results of the Genchi’s Breath-Hold Test (M ± SD) in male students were significantly higher than in female students: 35.074 ± 9.607 vs. 27.242 ± 7.902 seconds, respectively (p = 0.001, Student’s t-test). Response latency values (M ± SD) showed no statistically significant difference between male and female students: 0.282 ± 0.026 vs. 0.321 ± 0.069 seconds, respectively. Conclusion. Using the chosen method, medical students can independently monitor their functional status to prevent and correct the risk of its deterioration due to academic load.
