Keywords: women’s boxing, analysis of competitive strategy, technical and tactical actions, trend towards universality, elite boxers

Abstract

Aim. To conduct a comparative analysis of the performance styles and fighting techniques of Katie Taylor and Claressa Shields, two of the most accomplished boxing champions. The objective is to dissect their unique approaches to combat, with the intention of applying these insights to enhance the training methodologies for boxers within the republic. Materials and methods. The research methodology encompasses a dual approach, incorporating the examination of scholarly literature and the analysis of video recordings. Results. A comprehensive comparative analysis of their bouts at the 2012 Olympic Games, the 2014 World Championship, and the 2016 Olympic Games was performed. The derived metrics serve as an effective means for evaluating the boxing skills of the athletes. The challenge lies in the practical application of these metrics by trainers due to the labor-intensive nature of video analysis. Therefore, it is suggested to utilize those metrics that have a greater impact on the performance outcomes in competitions, such as the number of punches thrown; attack efficiency; defensive actions; and attack sequences. Conclusion. The comparative analysis of the competitive activities of Katie Taylor and Claressa Shields reveals that one of the primary trends in modern boxing is the trend towards universality. Consequently, in the tactics of contemporary boxers, the ability to adapt during a match and employ a variety of tactical maneuvers plays an increasingly significant role. Some athletes frequently change their tactics when they start losing or when it is necessary to confuse the opponent and prevent them from executing their plans.
